Calls on Congress to Strengthen Charter School Authorizing as House Committee Opens Hearings on ESEA Reauthorizations
Declaring that “authorizers have a responsibility to the public to maintain high standards, protect student and public interests, and preserve school autonomy,” NACSA President and CEO Greg Richmond urged Congress to strengthen charter school authorizing in testimony February 24, 2010 before the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee. Richmond cited the All Students Achieving through Reform (All-STAR) Act and reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as opportunities to adopt provisions improving charter authorizer practices.

A new study has found that more than half of Denver’s children today cannot access a performing school in the Denver public school system. The report also found that these children without access to a high-quality education are concentrated in several largely Hispanic communities within the city.
