State by State Overview

Charter schools are a creature of state law, and the rules and regulations that apply to them vary greatly from state to state. From the type of authorizers allowed (school districts, universities, state boards of education, municipalities or other institutions), to the pace of charter school growth, each state has a unique charter environment.
