NACSA’s President Testifies Before Congress

Calls on Congress to Strengthen Charter School Authorizing as House Subcommittee Conducts Hearings on ESEA Reauthorization

Telling legislators that “authorizers are your partners in assuring charter schools provide more high-quality educational opportunities for children, while playing by the rules and serving the public interest,” NACSA President and CEO Greg Richmond urged Congress to strengthen charter school authorizing in testimony today before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.

Richmond’s testimony can be found here. Richmond joined a select panel of national education policy experts invited by the Subcommittee to testify on charter school issues in its hearing on Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) reauthorization.

Declaring that “authorizers have a responsibility to the public to maintain high standards, protect student and public interests, and preserve school autonomy,” NACSA President and CEO Greg Richmond urged Congress to strengthen charter school authorizing in testimony February 24, 2010 before the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee.

Richmond cited the All Students Achieving through Reform (All-STAR) Act and reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as opportunities to adopt provisions improving charter authorizer practices.
